To wrap up the weekend, the girl and I went for oysters/brunch and Bloody Mary’s at Old Ebbitt Grill a block from the White House. I highly suggest the tucked away bar to the left as you walk in. It’s usually not busy, even though the restaurant can be packed, and the bartenders we’ve had are very cool.

Afterward, we headed over to the Newseum across from the National Gallery. I was recently contacted about a possible project with them, so I figured it would be a good time to finally check it out. It’s one of the few museums down by the Mall that isn’t free but they had a reduced price for the 4th of July weekend. Unfortunately we got there late in the day, since I was up until 5am drinking and launching fireworks in the street with a bunch of my neighbors. But that’s a whole other story.
So with our limited time, we got to check out only a few exhibits. The first was the Berlin Wall and watchtower. It was a cool display, with a lot of videos playing to give a comprehensive timeline of the wall being built, the atrocities in-between and finally the fall of the wall. I found it a little funny that only a few months ago I was taking tags on remnants of the wall in Berlin and now I was standing before it again in DC.

We also got to see all the Pulitzer Prize winning photographs. The exhibit includes each of the photographers and photo staffs who have won the prize since the Pulitzer board began awarding it to photographers in 1942. The images were amazing and some were hard to look at for very long.
They also had an interesting FBI exhibit called “G-Men and Journalists: Top News Stories of the FBI’s First Century”. Not only did they have videos and displays, but evidence from these famous cases. They had the actual Unabomber’s shack he lived in shipped from Montana. A huge sniper rifle that could pierce armored vehicles used by the Branch Davidians from Waco. Patty Hearst’s jacket and gun from her famous FBI photo. Even the trunk of the Caprice Classic the DC snipers used. This exhibit by far was the most interesting to me and I really wish I had more time to sit and watch all the videos.

Unfortunately we ran out of time checking out the newspaper headlines from the last century. I also didn’t have a chance to check out the Sept. 11th exhibit which included the large remains of the broadcast tower of the World Trade Center.
Anyway, if you are in DC or just visiting you should check it out. I’ll definitely be back.
