Ai Weiwei: According to What?

Well, hello again blog. Sorry I have been absent lately, but this time of year is always busy with traveling and projects. I have quite a bit to report, so I’ll try and get caught up.

Let’s start with the opening of Ai Weiwei’s first show in North America. You may have just recently seen on the web his take on that Gangnam Style video, but if you don’t know who this dissident Chinese artist is, brush up here or check out the documentary Never Sorry.

Anyway, my wife and I went to the opening night preview of According to What? at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum. I was curious to know what work was going to be in the show, since Ai Weiwei is still detained in China and was working on the show from afar. I was familiar with the sculptural pieces, but was surprised by the amount of photography, especially older photos from NYC and Tompkins Square Park in the 80s.

It is a great collection that will be running until February of 2013. If you are in DC, definitely go check it out. I snapped a few iPhone flicks of just a fraction of the work:
