Between the Lines

Saturday, September 1 - 24, 2017

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, September 2, 6 - 8pm

Location: Roman Fine Art
66 Park Place
East Hampton, New York 11937

BC84_UP.jpg

Roman Fine Art is pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition by Tim Conlon. This exhibition of new paintings and train sculptures titled Between the Lines marks Conlon’s first solo exhibit at Roman Fine Art. The exhibit will open with a reception for the artist Saturday, September 2, 6-8pm.

Between the Lines showcases the latest work in Conlon’s ongoing Blank Canvas series, a collection of freight train paintings that combine typography, abstraction and trompe-l’oeil. Using spray paint as the medium, the paintings are scale studies that bring railroad logos, weathered metal and paint and the art of graffiti into close focus. Conlon has spent almost twenty-five years walking train lines and documenting the plethora of rail company cars that have since consolidated or given way to time and decay. With the advent of intermodal freight transport, the once prevalent boxcars inch closer to extinction as shipping containers take their place.

Between the Lines presents the findings of a rail archeologist. This survey features snapshots of these shipping behemoths preserved on canvas, as well as a study of G scale model trains. The train paintings feature the clean lines of manufactured steel and the organic beauty of oxidation with an overlay of modern day graffiti. Conlon’s work involves many layers and color transitions in a mixed media fashion. About this style, Conlon says, “Certain pieces that I’ve created depend on acrylics for effect and detail, but I try to work within the parameters or ‘rules’ of a graffiti artist: your work must show your ability to produce strictly from a can of spray paint or marker. A writer’s ‘can control’ is the most important painting skill to learn, so it has been important to me to continue evolving this technique on to canvas.”

Conlon is straddling the world of urban art and the traditional gallery space to bridge ideas from work in the studio to pieces on the street. Conlon’s goal is to build on the traditional letterform techniques he has learned through spray painting while pushing the boundaries of art using the basic tools of graffiti to create themes that appeal to a wider audience.

MUMBO SAUCE

April 5, 2013 – April 21, 2013

TUESDAY - SUNDAY, 11 to 6PM until April 21

Location: Contemporary Wing 906 H Street, NE 20002 Washington, DC

MUMBO SAUCE is an art exhibition planned in response to PUMP ME UP – D.C. subculture of the 1980san art exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art curated by Roger Gastman that will open February 22, 2013. Curated by Lauren Gentile, owner of Contemporary Wing gallery, and Roger Gastman, MUMBO SAUCE is a survey of artists who have, or once had, deep roots in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will be an exploration and commentary on how the environment of Go-Go, graffiti, punk, hardcore, graphic design and fine art has influenced their work.

Mumbo Sauce is a red, sweet, and tangy sauce, thinner than barbeque sauce and similar to plum sauce. Arguably indigenous to Washington, D.C., the condiment is found in carry outs throughout D.C. and the surrounding metro areas. Mumbo Sauce is a part of the African American culture and is the flavor of home for true D.C. natives.

Just like the sense of identity that Mumbo Sauce carries for D.C., the artists featured in the exhibit will be creating new works and tribute installations surveying their relationships and remembrances from living and working in the Capital. The participating artists are BORF, Richard Colman, Cynthia Connolly, Tim Conlon, COOL "DISCO" DAN, Mark Jenkins, Globe Poster Archive, Clark Fox, Rosina Teri Memolo, Mingering Mike and Robin Rose.

The art will be in various media and for sale.

Opening, Friday, April 5

4 - 6pm Press Preview (private)

6 - 10pm Reception (artists in attendance)
